Parliament Discusses Government Finance Law Proposal and Opposition Criticisms

The Danish Parliament is currently debating the government’s proposed finance law for the upcoming year, with discussions focusing on spending, economic leeway, and the reintroduction of a previously abolished public holiday. The debate includes criticisms from both sides regarding the responsible use of public funds.

Finance spokesman Dennis Flydtkjær (DD) criticized the government for utilizing the available economic leeway to fund welfare improvements. He questioned why, with increased government spending, funds could not be allocated to reinstate Store Bededag (Great Prayer Day), a public holiday that was abolished by the current government. Flydtkjær argued that if the government can afford widespread spending, the public should not lose a holiday that could generate significant revenue.

Finance spokesman Benny Engelbrecht (S) defended the government’s measures, highlighting initiatives such as reduced electricity tax, the removal of taxes on coffee and chocolate, and more affordable daycare with increased staffing. Engelbrecht argued that these measures, while seemingly small, provide tangible financial relief to pensioners and families, especially in light of rising food prices. He also addressed concerns about increased public spending, attributing it largely to rising defense and security costs following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Engelbrecht also targeted the four blue parties, referencing their recent Bourgeois Convention where they presented 50 proposals for a potential future government. He questioned the financial feasibility of these proposals. One of the key proposals from the blue parties is the reintroduction of Store Bededag, which was abolished by the current government and led to a decline in their poll numbers.
