Østamager, a district in Copenhagen, has undergone significant urban renewal, transforming from a once-violent, working-class area into a safer, more attractive neighborhood. Crime rates have fallen, and families, artists, and the creative class have moved in, signaling gentrification.
While Østamager has seen improvements, it still lags behind other districts in Copenhagen regarding nighttime safety. A recent survey indicates that 77% of Østamager residents feel safe in the evening and at night, a significant increase from 66% in 2009. In contrast, 85% of residents on Vestamager feel safe after dark.
Interestingly, despite the lower sense of safety at night, Østamager has fewer police reports than Vestamager. In 2024, Østamager reported 44 cases of criminal law crime per 1,000 inhabitants, while Vestamager reported 51 cases per 1,000 inhabitants.
Both Østamager and Vestamager have lower crime rates than Copenhagen as a whole, where the average is 73 cases of criminal law crime reported per 1,000 inhabitants.
