A Danish man, Philip Poulsen, developed orthorexia, an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating, after being inspired by bodybuilders and social media trends. This condition significantly impacted his life, leading to social isolation and, eventually, physical pain.
Poulsen’s journey began in his youth when he became self-conscious about his body. Inspired by figures like Will Smith in “I Am Legend” and bodybuilder Jay Cutler, he started a rigorous diet and exercise regime. He consumed large amounts of protein, tracked his calorie intake meticulously, and worked out for hours daily. This obsession with control over his diet and exercise became a defining characteristic of his life.
Orthorexia is not a formally recognized eating disorder, making it challenging to quantify its prevalence. However, a 2019 report indicated that a notable percentage of young adults in Denmark exhibited symptoms of orthorexia, exceeding the combined rates of anorexia and bulimia. Experts believe that social media may contribute to the rise in orthorexia cases.
Poulsen’s lifestyle led him to prioritize his strict routine over social interactions. He would often skip social events or compensate for deviations from his diet with excessive exercise and fasting. This behavior took a toll on his well-being, culminating in unexplained abdominal pain that prompted him to seek medical attention.
A stomach specialist recognized Poulsen’s condition and advised him to relax his strict eating habits. This moment was a turning point for Poulsen, who realized the extent of his obsession. He gradually incorporated previously forbidden foods like pasta and bread into his diet and reduced his training intensity.
Now a psychotherapist, Poulsen reflects on his experience and emphasizes the importance of open communication and support. He wishes someone had recognized his unhealthy behavior earlier and encourages people to check in with their loved ones and offer reassurance that they are enough without striving for an unattainable ideal of perfection.
