Number of Employees with Private Health Insurance in Denmark Reaches Record High

The number of Danish employees with private health insurance or health schemes has reached a record high, tripling since 2010. According to figures from Insurance & Pension (F&P), over three million employees in Denmark now have health insurance.

The vast majority of these individuals receive insurance through their employer-paid pension schemes. In 2010, only 1.2 million Danes had such an arrangement, marking a significant increase over the past fourteen years.

In 2024, almost 700,000 Danes received assistance from their health schemes, according to Kent Damsgaard, CEO of F&P.

While physiotherapy remains the most common use for these schemes, there is a growing trend in the utilization of mental health services, particularly for stress-related issues, according to Damsgaard. Health schemes often provide psychological support for stress and physiotherapy for physical injuries.

Jesper Brask Fischer, welfare manager at PFA Pension, highlights the increasing importance of health and the normalization of health insurance, calling the three million health insurance policies a “milestone”.

Fischer also notes that more health insurance policies are being established for employees in the public sector, although historically, private sector employees have been the primary beneficiaries of health schemes. Additionally, there is growing interest among recent retirees in obtaining individual health insurance policies.

Most Danes have private health insurance through collective workplace schemes. According to F&P, the number of individually subscribed schemes has slightly decreased compared to previous years.
