No Special Tests for Greenlandic Parents in Child Placement Cases

The development of specialized psychological tests for Greenlandic parents facing child placement evaluations has been abandoned. This decision follows concerns that existing tests are not adequately adapted to Greenlandic language and culture, potentially leading to unjust parental separation.

Minister for Social Affairs and Housing Sophie Hæstorp Andersen stated that Greenlandic authorities have declined further work on test adaptation. This information was conveyed in a letter to the Folketing’s Greenland Committee and the Folketing’s Social Committee.

Mads Pedersen, the Greenlandic Minister for Children, Youth and Families, communicated that Greenland does not wish to pursue the translation and adaptation of psychological tests.

Instead, a new unit with expertise in Greenlandic language and culture has been established within the Social and Housing Board. This unit assists in conducting assessments that replace standardized tests in investigations involving Greenlandic parents, operating under a law that came into effect in May.

Tina Naamansen, chairman of Sila 360, an association focused on legal certainty for Greenlandic families, expressed dismay at the decision. The association finds it incomprehensible that efforts to create scientifically based assessments for Greenlandic parents are being discontinued.
