New Survey on Danes’ Attitudes Towards Same-Sex Relations Deemed Homophobic

A recent survey on Danish attitudes towards same-sex relationships has sparked debate, with Jehovah’s Witnesses and members of Indre Mission being identified as groups with a higher proportion of individuals holding negative views. The study, led by chief physician Morten Frisch, has drawn criticism for labeling differing opinions as “homophobic.”

The survey indicated that a significant percentage of Jehovah’s Witnesses believe same-sex relations are morally unacceptable. This finding has led to discussions about prejudice and tolerance within religious communities.

However, a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Poul Evald Jensen, has contested the study’s characterization of the religious group as homophobic. Jensen, a 72-year-old pensioner, argues that homophobia is characterized by contempt, prejudice, and aversion, which he does not believe accurately reflects the views of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Jensen highlights the official stance of Jehovah’s Witnesses, as stated on their website, which emphasizes respect for all people regardless of their background or beliefs. The organization condemns hate crimes and promotes treating others with kindness and respect, even when disagreements exist.

Jensen suggests that the study may be contributing to prejudice against Jehovah’s Witnesses, who already face various forms of discrimination. He questions whether the study, intended to address prejudice, has inadvertently perpetuated it against a minority religious group.
