A new translation of the Bible in Danish is set to be published in 2036, marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in Denmark, featuring updated language and interpretations. The Danish Bible Society (Bibelselskabet) has unveiled some of the changes that will be included in the new version.

One significant change involves the translation of Genesis, where the original text tasks mankind to “rule” over creation. The updated version replaces “rule” with “have dominion over.” This change is intended to move away from the connotations of heavy-handed power associated with the word “rule.” The Hebrew word radâ is more accurately interpreted as supervising and taking responsibility.

The new translation will also include greater recognition of women. In Paul’s greetings to the congregation in Philippi, the updated version will greet both “sisters” and “brothers,” whereas the previous translation only mentioned “brothers.”

Secretary General of the Danish Bible Society, Johannes Baun, who is also a member of the editorial board behind the translation project, emphasizes the importance of finding precise and rewarding wording. According to Baun, if future generations are to appreciate the Bible, the language needs to evolve while maintaining the original meaning. The translation aims to strike a delicate balance between tradition and modern understanding.

Other changes include revising the terminology used to describe Jesus’ death. For instance, the updated version may use the term “corpse” instead of “body” in certain contexts.
