New Closing Law Allows Extended Opening Hours in Small Towns

Shops in towns with fewer than 16,850 inhabitants will be permitted to remain open on current closing days, according to a recent agreement.

The adjustment to the closing law was announced in a press release from the Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs.

The agreement to amend the closing law was reached between the government, the Conservative party, the Danish People’s Party, and the Social Liberal party.

Parties involved have agreed to terminate the current agreement on the closing law, with the new adjustments taking effect after the next general election.

The next general election must take place no later than October 31, 2026, meaning the changes may not be implemented for some time.

The current closing days affected by the law are: December 25th and 26th, New Year’s Day, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Monday, Ascension Day, and Whit Sunday.
