New Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge Planned for Copenhagen

Copenhagen is planning a new bridge to connect Østerbro and Refshaleøen, aiming to ease transport for cyclists and pedestrians. The bridge will potentially serve as a key connection to the future Lynetteholm project.

An analysis has examined different options for the bicycle and pedestrian connection, highlighting both advantages and disadvantages. The Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Lars Weiss, has confirmed that a bridge will be built, but the final design is yet to be decided.

The analysis considered a low bridge, a medium-height bridge, and a pendulum ferry. Rambøll, the company that conducted the study, initially favors the low bridge option. This solution is seen as more affordable, user-friendly, and familiar.

The proposed low bridge would directly link Indiakaj-vejen near Langelinie and Refshaleøen by the Reffen food market. It would include a 60-meter wide opening span to allow the passage of sailing vessels.

While the low bridge is user-friendly and avoids disrupting cruise ships, it is acknowledged that it could impact sailing in Christianshavn’s canal. The analysis notes that improvements for cyclists and pedestrians might worsen conditions for sailors. Frequent bridge openings for ships could also inconvenience cyclists.

The sea area is used by a large number of boats and sailboats annually. A bridge will inevitably restrict their free passage. Despite this, the low bridge is considered the least disruptive and costly option, although the Navy, sailing clubs, and businesses would prefer a pendulum ferry.

A pendulum ferry would cost twice as much as a low bridge, totaling two billion kroner, and the journey time is estimated to be between 9.5 and 17.5 minutes. A tunnel was also considered but was dismissed due to high costs and a lack of experience in building long tunnels for cyclists and pedestrians.

The estimated cost of the recommended low bridge is one billion kroner. The matter will be discussed by the Technical and Environmental Committee, and the solution will be included in budget negotiations for the Municipality of Copenhagen 2026.
