NATO Countries Expected to Reach 5% Defense Spending Target in Early 2030s

NATO countries are projected to meet the target of allocating five percent of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to defense spending in the early 2030s. This expectation comes ahead of a NATO defense ministers meeting in Brussels.

The new model for NATO countries’ defense spending involves dividing the expenses into two categories. Specifically, 3.5 percent of GDP should be allocated to direct defense investments, while 1.5 percent should be directed towards societal preparedness or resilience, totaling the 5 percent goal.

Denmark anticipates spending 3.2 percent of its GDP on defense this year, nearing 3.5 percent. Denmark is very close to meeting the 3.5 percent direct defense investment goal in 2025.

According to Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, Denmark can expect a combination of incorporating current expenditures into the 1.5 percent societal resilience allocation, and additional investments may be required to fulfill the resilience portion of the spending target.
