Molslinjen Orders Electric Ferries for Jutland-Zealand Route

Molslinjen plans to deploy two battery-powered catamaran ferries on the route between Jutland and Zealand, replacing diesel-powered vessels. The first ferry is expected to be completed by early 2028.

The project includes significant onshore infrastructure development for electricity storage.

A potential third ferry is also under consideration for deployment on the same route.

The initiative aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 132,000 tonnes annually.

Each of the three ferries will measure 129 meters in length, accommodating 1483 passengers and 500 cars, making them larger than the Express 5.

Each ferry will be equipped with 45,000 kilowatt-hour battery packs, requiring 30-minute charging sessions in port between trips.

The onshore infrastructure is estimated to cost DKK 3.5 billion.

The electrification project is supported by a government green pool.

Molslinjen has already electrified several other ferry routes, including Esbjerg-Fanø and Zealand-Samsø. The Bøjden-Fynshav route is also scheduled to be electrified later this year.
