Hundreds of homing pigeons have gone missing in Denmark after a race on Saturday, prompting numerous inquiries from concerned citizens. The Danish Pigeon Associations are reporting a surge in calls and messages from people who have found stray pigeons, primarily in the southern Jutland region.
Martin Hansen, chairman of the Pigeon Association in Aalborg and the surrounding area, stated that his association alone has received over 100 inquiries on Facebook. He noted the high level of engagement from the public in the search for the lost birds.
As many as 900 pigeons went astray during the race, which started in Vejen. The pigeons were released to fly home to North Jutland but became disoriented due to unusual weather conditions.
According to reports, a weather front with a sharp contrast between cold and warm air is believed to have confused the pigeons, causing them to lose their way.
Hansen expressed his surprise at the incident, saying he has never seen anything similar. He highlighted that another race held on the same day, involving 500 pigeons, saw all birds successfully return home. The cause of the mass disorientation remains unclear.
