Mikkel Aagaard’s Breakthrough on the National Ice Hockey Team

Mikkel Aagaard, at 29 years old, has emerged as a key player for the Danish national ice hockey team under coach Mikael Gath, scoring five goals at the World Championships. This marks a significant shift from his earlier roles under previous coaches, where he was primarily seen as a role player.

Aagaard attributes his improved performance to the increased responsibility and freedom he has been given by Gath. He feels he is now able to play in a style more similar to his club play, expressing gratitude for the trust placed in him. He also took time away from the spotlight to study at a Canadian University.

Having debuted at the World Championships as a developing player, Aagaard experienced limited opportunities under Janne Karlsson and later Heinz Ehlers. He focused on adapting to their strategies and embracing his assigned role.

Playing in a World Championship held in Herning, Denmark, is described by Aagaard as one of the highlights of his career. He values the chance to perform in front of his friends and family.

The Danish national team, including Aagaard, is scheduled to compete in the quarter-finals against Canada.
