A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to six years in prison for negligent manslaughter and expelled from Denmark following a fatal traffic accident last spring that claimed the life of a 55-year-old woman. The man, identified as Milad Sadiqi, also received a permanent entry ban and a driving disqualification.
The verdict was delivered at the Court in Herning on Thursday afternoon, where Sadiqi was found guilty of the majority of charges against him. The accident occurred on April 24 last year on Vejlevej near Nørre Snede in Central Jutland.
Evidence presented during the trial indicated that Sadiqi was driving at 111 kilometers per hour in a 90 kilometer per hour zone. He overtook a van in a prohibited area, resulting in a collision with the 55-year-old woman, who was a mother of two, in her lane.
Sadiqi claimed the woman suddenly changed lanes, causing the accident, but the court rejected his explanation based on the vehicle inspector’s statement and witness testimonies. The evidence confirmed the accident occurred in the woman’s lane.
Senior prosecutor Flemming Hother had argued for a seven-year prison sentence, citing Sadiqi’s prior convictions involving danger to persons. Hother also sought his expulsion, unless it violated international obligations. The defense attorney, Alexander Nyborg Christensen, argued for a lighter sentence of 4.5 to 5 years and a limited expulsion period. The defense attorney indicated an appeal to the High Court, seeking acquittal on the main charge of negligent manslaughter.
