A 69-year-old man from Kalundborg died on Saturday after being struck by a car during the Nykøbing Falster Motor Sports 75th Anniversary rally in Stege on Møn. The Danish Automobile Sports Union confirmed the death in a written statement.
The accident occurred during a speed test when a participant lost control of their vehicle and hit two officials. The incident took place on Kong Asgers Vej in Stege at approximately 9:40 a.m. Saturday.
Another official, a 64-year-old man from Vestegnen, was seriously injured and transported to the hospital. According to the police, he remains in critical condition. Their families have been informed.
Police are investigating the incident. “We are investigating it as an industrial accident because it happened in a cordoned-off area where there was a motor race that had been authorized,” stated shift supervisor Morten Kronbo of South Zealand and Lolland-Falster Police. A vehicle inspector has been called in to investigate the accident’s circumstances.
The Danish Automobile Sports Union expressed shock and concern. “We stopped immediately and called for help. The cars come in close succession, so a new team arrived just one minute later. They all provided first aid,” said Morten Alstrup from the association. He added that the injured men were responsible for the cordoning off.
Immediately following the accident, an ambulance and emergency medical team arrived on the scene.
The anniversary race has been canceled. The rally was scheduled to start at Nykøbing F. Hall in Nykøbing, with three tests on Falster and two on Møn. The speed tests were to occur on 11 asphalted sections, totaling 136 kilometers.
As of now, no charges have been filed. The cause of the accident remains unclear.
