Man Arrested After Fatal Stabbing at Holstebro Asylum Center

A 37-year-old man has been detained and charged with manslaughter following the death of a 32-year-old resident at an asylum center in Holstebro. The incident occurred early Saturday morning when the victim was stabbed in the chest.

The 32-year-old man was found deceased by police upon their arrival at the Nybo Bakke asylum center around 1:40 AM on Saturday. He had sustained a stab wound to the chest.

The suspect, a 37-year-old Belarusian asylum seeker, appeared in court in Herning for a preliminary hearing on Saturday afternoon. While he denies guilt, he has accepted the detention.

The judge found reasonable suspicion of gross violence resulting in death. Police are currently withholding information regarding the motive behind the stabbing as they conduct further investigations and interrogations over the next four weeks.

Authorities aim to determine the relationship between the two men. The asylum center houses just over 300 people of over 30 nationalities, including families with children.

According to asylum director Liselotte Strier Birkholm, the incident involved only the two individuals. Staff are providing support to the other residents. Due to the event, staff are present on Saturday, despite the center typically operating without staff presence at night and on weekends, with residents acting as guards.

The 37-year-old’s detention is set to expire on August 7, at which point a judge will determine whether an extension is warranted.
