Lowest Electricity Prices in Over a Year Recorded in June

The average pure electricity price in Denmark plummeted to its lowest level in over a year during June, according to statements from electricity providers Norlys and Andel Energi.

The companies reported that the average price settled at approximately 40 øre per kilowatt hour, excluding taxes and levies. Andel Energi notes that similar average prices have not been seen since February 2024.

A significant number of hours with negative electricity prices, driven by abundant solar and wind energy production, contributed to the price decrease, according to Andel Energi. Commercial Director Josefine Walter highlights the impact of the many hours of sunshine combined with strong winds in creating the surge of negative-price hours.

Eastern Denmark experienced 66 hours in June where the pure electricity price fell below one krone, while Western Denmark saw as many as 116 hours with negative electricity prices.

While June benefited from ample sun and wind, leading to lower prices, the recent heatwave across Europe has contributed to higher electricity prices at the beginning of July. Norlys points out that the increased demand for electricity for cooling purposes during the evenings has put upward pressure on prices.

It’s important to note that the pure electricity price represents only a portion of the total electricity bill, which also includes tariffs, subscriptions, spot supplements, and VAT.
