The Liberal Party (Venstre) is advocating for a significant increase in the handyman deduction to bolster climate-proofing efforts across Denmark. Party chairman Troels Lund Poulsen announced this initiative during his speech at the People’s Meeting on Bornholm. The proposal aims to make it more affordable for homeowners to protect their properties against water damage and other climate-related issues.
The current handyman deduction, a popular scheme, allows homeowners to deduct expenses related to home improvements, including climate-proofing measures. Venstre believes that expanding this deduction will encourage more Danes to take proactive steps to safeguard their homes against the increasing threat of extreme weather.
While Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized the importance of enhancing the handyman deduction, he did not provide specific figures or percentages for the proposed increase. He indicated that the exact amount would be determined closer to the next parliamentary election in 2026, as part of a comprehensive plan that considers other political priorities.
The existing “green” handyman deduction is DKK 8,600 per adult in a household annually, offering a tax saving of approximately DKK 2,240 per year when fully utilized. The SVM government, at Venstre’s initiative, reintroduced the deduction this year after its abolition by the previous government. Venstre’s push for a higher deduction is driven by the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in Denmark, making climate security a pressing concern.
In addition to climate-proofing, Troels Lund Poulsen, also the Minister of Defence, addressed the possibility of Ukrainian arms manufacturers establishing production facilities in Denmark. He anticipates that Denmark will soon be ready to welcome Ukrainian defence companies specializing in drones and other defence equipment. This move aims to support Ukraine’s war efforts and enhance Denmark’s own defence capabilities.
