Liberal Party Considers Relaxing Pimping Laws

The Liberal party (Venstre) is considering relaxing the paragraph on pimping in the penal code, according to the government party’s social affairs spokesperson, Christian Friis Bach.

Bach stated that it is inappropriate to prevent sex workers who want to be in the profession from achieving decent working conditions. These conditions include organizing into trade unions, employing security personnel, or renting premises.

The government has recently established a working group to examine the consequences of the existing pimping law, which prohibits operating a business where an individual engages in sexual relations with a customer for payment. The law aims to protect sex workers, primarily women, from exploitation.

Minister for Social Affairs and Housing Sophie Hæstorp Andersen (Social Democrats) has expressed openness to reviewing the legislation to determine if it hinders sex workers from attaining security and safety.

Previously, both the Liberal party and the Social Democrats have resisted calls to abolish or ease the pimping law. In 2015, legal affairs spokesperson Preben Bang Henriksen (Liberal party) stated that the party saw no reason to amend the law, citing the high level of crime associated with it. Trine Bramsen (Social Democrats), then legal affairs spokesperson, shared a similar view, asserting that relaxing the pimping law was unacceptable due to the selling and trading of women for prostitution.

These statements followed a proposal from the Liberal Alliance to relax the law. At the time, the Conservatives also indicated their willingness to review the pimping law. The current penalty for pimping is up to four years in prison.
