Large-Scale Marine Nature Restoration Project Launched in Sejerø Bay

A major marine restoration project is underway in Sejerø Bay, aiming to revitalize the coastal ecosystem. Over the next five years, the project will focus on reintroducing key species and habitats.

The initiative, spearheaded by WWF Verdensnaturfonden (WWF World Wildlife Fund) in collaboration with universities, municipalities, and organizations, is considered one of Denmark’s most ambitious marine restoration endeavors. The project seeks to address the decline in biodiversity and habitat quality that has occurred in the bay over recent decades.

Key components of the restoration plan include the planting of eelgrass, the release of half a million cod, and the establishment of blue mussel banks and stone reefs. These measures are designed to restore critical habitats and boost fish stocks, ultimately bringing back the vibrant marine life that once thrived in the bay.

“We want to bring that life back by restoring a number of important habitats and fish stocks that are in poor condition today,” stated WWF Secretary General Mikkel Aarø-Hansen, highlighting the project’s objective to reverse the degradation of the bay’s marine environment.
