King Christian X’s Diary Reveals His Initial Impression of Adolf Hitler

King Christian X’s personal diaries reveal his unimpressed reaction to Adolf Hitler during their initial meeting in 1934. The diaries, accessed by Kristeligt Dagblad, shed light on the Danish royal family’s relationship with Nazi Germany, a topic of debate following the publication of “Scratches in the Paint – The Royal Family’s Connections to Hitler’s Germany” by journalist Peter Kramer.

According to Kristeligt Dagblad, the diaries show the king coordinated his three meetings with the German chancellor with the Danish government.

The diary entries support the established view that Christian X’s actions aligned with the government’s stance, dismissing any notion of an independent course, according to historian Steen Andersen.

The National Archives granted Kristeligt Dagblad access to Christian X’s notes on his meetings with Adolf Hitler following the debate about the book, allowing researchers to assess the statements in Peter Kramer’s book.

Queen Margrethe has previously commented on the book, particularly the section concerning her parents, King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, deeming it sensationalized.

Peter Kramer stated that the newspaper’s access to Christian X’s diaries confirms that the meetings with Adolf Hitler were the king’s initiative.
