King and Queen Explore Samsø’s Green Future

King Frederik and Queen Mary concluded their late summer cruise on Thursday with a visit to Samsø, gaining insights into the island’s ambitious green master plan. The royal couple’s visit highlighted Samsø’s commitment to sustainability and its pioneering role in renewable energy.

During their visit, Mayor Marcel Meijer, along with falconer Louise Vedel, landowner Jens Kristian Kjeldahl, and biologist Knud Tybirk, briefed the King and Queen on the island’s comprehensive green master plan. This plan is designed to establish a sustainable framework for the use of Samsø’s land, integrating nature, agriculture, and development.

The visit included a stop at Brundby Stubmølle, one of Denmark’s remaining post mills, offering a scenic view of Samsø’s natural landscape. Samsø has been recognized for its dedication to the green transition since being designated Denmark’s renewable energy island in 1997. By 2007, the island had achieved self-sufficiency in renewable energy.

King Frederik has expressed his commitment to supporting the green transition during his reign. This late summer cruise marks his second sailing season as regent.
