Isam B, formerly of the group Outlandish, has released a new song titled “Eid i København” (Eid in Copenhagen) to celebrate the Muslim holiday of Eid. The song is described as a sequel to his previous song “Ramadan i København,” which faced criticism when included in the Folk High School Songbook in 2019.
Isam B collaborated with Malte Nordtorp Pedersen to write the song, which he calls “a poetic and life-affirming celebration of the joy that brings families and friends together across the country – regardless of background.” The lyrics include both joyous expressions of shared prayer and humorous observations about everyday life during the Eid celebration.
Thomas Hoffmann, a professor and Islamic scholar, interprets the song as “rich in layers of meaning” and notes its clever use of immigrant language syntax. While acknowledging the warmth and community depicted in the song, Hoffmann suggests it also carries a “missionary intention,” inviting the world to the Eid celebration.
Isam B clarified that the song is intended as a window into the Eid celebration and a reflection of his experiences growing up in Nørrebro. He rejects accusations of proselytization, stating that a song alone cannot convert someone. He expresses frustration with the negative portrayal of Islam in the media and emphasizes the contributions of Muslims to Danish society. He sees the song as a picture of Denmark in 2025, promoting unity and celebration.
