Copenhagen Municipality is launching an investigation into its technical systems after a former employee allegedly misused the Civil Registration System (CPR) to aid in planning murders related to gang activity. The announcement follows the arrest of a 27-year-old man, a former municipal employee, charged with violent crimes, including complicity in attempted murder.
The National Unit for Special Crime (NSK) believes the man exploited his past access to the CPR registry to locate individuals’ addresses. He allegedly obtained this information through his former employment with the municipality.
Jens-Kristian Lütken (V), the municipality’s employment and integration mayor, will bring the matter before the finance committee. He emphasized the importance of addressing any vulnerabilities in the system to prevent future misuse. While his own administration has a system that flags unauthorized searches, Lütken acknowledges that other administrations require broader access to the CPR registry, such as those issuing passports. He has not been informed of any misuse within his administration but cannot rule it out.
Mayor Lars Weiss (S) stated that the municipality views the case with “great, great seriousness.” In a written statement, Weiss condemned the alleged abuse of position as “completely unheard of and unacceptable,” emphasizing that such actions “must not and should not be able to take place.”
