Intelligence Services Offer Assistance to Ahmed Samsam in Terrorism Conviction Case

The Police Intelligence Service (PET) and the Defence Intelligence Service (FE) are offering assistance to Ahmed Samsam in his case regarding a terrorism conviction in Spain. This follows a Supreme Court ruling that PET and FE must acknowledge their cooperation with Samsam during his trips to Syria.

PET has contacted Ahmed Samsam’s lawyer to discuss how the services can contribute to the proceedings in Spain. The intelligence services are working through the State Attorney to clarify the next steps.

Ahmed Samsam confirmed that PET contacted his lawyer to find out how they can best assist in the further proceedings regarding the case in Spain.

Samsam’s cooperation with FE and PET occurred in connection with trips to Syria in 2013 and 2014.

In June 2017, he was arrested in Spain and sentenced to eight years in prison the following year for joining the Islamic State.

During the trial in Spain, Samsam stated that he fought with Syrian rebels, not the Islamic State, and that he had been recruited by PET and FE after his first trip to Syria.

The intelligence services did not acknowledge this at the time, leading to his conviction in Spain, a case he now seeks to reopen.

According to Ahmed Samsam, the commitment from the intelligence service has been verbal.

His lawyer was informed by the public prosecutor, on behalf of the intelligence service, that they were asked to contact him to hear how they can help and assist.
