Despite warnings of dangerous weather conditions, insurance companies in Denmark have received fewer reports of damage than initially anticipated following heavy rainfall earlier this week. Topdanmark, If, Tryg, and GF Forsikring have collectively received approximately 860 claims related to the rain on Monday and Tuesday.
While the number of claims is lower than expected, insurance companies anticipate further reports in the coming days. Tryg, for example, has observed an increase in claim submissions on Wednesday, with reports of sewer systems being overwhelmed, particularly on the South Sea Islands, leading to water backing up through toilets and drains. Additionally, saturated ground is causing water seepage through basement walls.
The majority of the claims received thus far involve water damage in basements, water leaks through roofs, and sewage backups. If and Topdanmark also foresee a rise in late reports, particularly as holidaymakers return home to discover water damage.
GF Forsikring attributes the lower-than-expected number of claims to improved preventative measures taken by homeowners, such as better basement protection against flooding. This includes replacing vulnerable materials like wooden floors and plasterboard walls with more water-resistant alternatives, facilitating easier cleanup and minimizing damage.
