Inheritance Tax Relief for Nephews and Nieces Proposed in Upcoming Budget

The government is set to reduce inheritance taxes for nephews and nieces, aligning them with the rates currently applied to the deceased’s children. This initiative, disclosed by Mohammad Rona, political spokesperson for the Modernes party, to Jyllands-Posten, aims to address disparities in the current tax system.

Currently, nephews and nieces face an inheritance tax rate of approximately 36 percent when inheriting from an aunt or uncle. The proposed change seeks to lower this rate to 15 percent.

Mohammad Rona emphasized the principle of familial autonomy, stating, “The state should not decide who is family and what family constellations look like.” He further articulated the need for equitable tax treatment for individuals without children, asserting, “We must ensure that those who do not have children, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, receive the same tax rate as everyone else with children.”

While the Moderates are receptive to additional adjustments to the inheritance tax for other beneficiary groups, the immediate focus is on establishing parity between nephews and nieces and direct descendants.

The implementation of this proposal, estimated to cost the state around 100 million kroner annually, is slated for January 1, 2027.
