Information Material Being Prepared for Dog Owners in Wolf Areas

Following the discovery of two dead dogs suspected to have been killed by wolves, the Agency for Green Restructuring and Water Environment is preparing information material for dog owners in wolf areas. This marks the first instance of dogs being killed by wolves in Denmark since their re-immigration in 2012.

The agency will also conduct information meetings this autumn to educate residents on necessary precautions for dog owners in wolf territories. These meetings aim to provide practical guidance on how to protect dogs from potential wolf attacks.

Jens Skovager Østergaard, head of office at the agency, emphasizes, “It is first and foremost important that dogs do not roam around alone at night.” This recommendation is a key element of the preventative measures being communicated to dog owners.

The two incidents involve dogs found in different locations. One dog was discovered on April 18 near Ikast in Midtjylland, and the other on March 10 near Ulfborg in Vestjylland.

DNA evidence confirmed the presence of wolf DNA on the dog found near Ikast, and bite patterns, along with wolf traces in the area, suggest a wolf attack. While it cannot be definitively confirmed that the dog found near Ulfborg was killed by a wolf, the agency suspects similar bite marks to those found on the Ikast dog.
