Information Campaign Launched for Dog Owners in Wolf Areas

Danish authorities are preparing an information campaign for dog owners in areas inhabited by wolves, following the confirmed and suspected wolf killings of two dogs. The Agency for Green Conversion and Water Environment is initiating these measures, including informational meetings in the fall, to educate the public on preventative actions.

The initiative follows the first confirmed cases of wolf-related dog deaths in Denmark since wolves repopulated the region in 2012. One dog, discovered near Ikast in Central Jutland on April 18, had DNA evidence confirming a wolf attack. Bite patterns and wolf presence in the vicinity supported this conclusion.

A second dog, found south of Ulfborg in West Jutland about a month prior, displayed similar bite marks, although a definitive wolf kill could not be established. In both instances, the dogs were unsupervised and roaming freely at night, suggesting chance encounters with wolves.

Jens Skovager Østergaard, head of department at the agency, emphasized the importance of keeping dogs from roaming alone at night. He clarified that these incidents do not indicate a “problem wolf,” which he defined as a wolf attacking a dog within a fenced area, on a leash, or under the owner’s direct control.

According to the latest wolf monitoring assessment, there are currently 42 wolves in Denmark, all residing in Jutland.
