Increased Number of Foreign Children Requires New Reception Classes in Danish Suburbs

Brøndbyvester School in Copenhagen’s western suburbs has experienced a significant increase in foreign children who do not speak Danish, necessitating the creation of 11 new reception classes. This surge contrasts sharply with 2022 when the school had none.

The influx of foreign labor into Denmark is placing pressure on municipalities and their resources. Social Democratic ministers Kaare Dybvad and Mattias Tesfaye visited the area to assess the challenges firsthand.

Local municipal employees report that newcomers often require extensive support, ranging from navigating the Danish bureaucratic system to understanding cultural differences. They described challenges, such as families living in overcrowded conditions, children lacking stimulation, and difficulties in communication due to language barriers.

The ministers’ visit highlights a broader debate within the Danish government regarding the impact of foreign labor on social cohesion and municipal finances. While some emphasize the economic contributions of foreign workers, others express concerns about the strain on public services and the integration of newcomers.
