Increase in Employment Among Seniors Over 60 in 2024

More seniors over 60 in Denmark entered the workforce in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to data from the Danish Agency for Labour Market and Recruitment. The figures, analyzed by the interest group Lederne (The Leaders), reveal a notable shift in employment trends.

Specifically, 49,549 individuals in the 60+ age bracket started new jobs last year, marking an increase of nearly 3,000 compared to the prior year. This is the highest figure recorded since 2009, when statistics in this area began being tracked. In contrast, the number of new hires in the 18-59 age group decreased during the same period.

Kim Møller Laursen, chief employment policy consultant at Lederne, notes the significance of this trend. He emphasizes that the progress observed among the most experienced workers contrasts with the decline in other age groups, suggesting a growing recognition of seniors as valuable contributors to the labor market.

Surveys suggest that a growing number of individuals are choosing to postpone full retirement and re-enter the workforce, contributing to overall employment levels. Jesper Brask Fischer, welfare and senior manager at the pension fund PFA, has pointed to a cultural shift in the Danish labor market, where work provides not only income but also a sense of identity and structure.

Møller Laursen adds that this development challenges the notion that working life ends at 60. Seniors are demonstrating increased job mobility, aligning with the evolving demands of the modern labor market.
