Hørsholm Municipality is pushing for more parking spaces at Rungsted Kyst Station to ease commuter stress and encourage train usage. The municipality is frustrated with DSB’s (Danish State Railways) handling of a 3,400 square meter plot of land at the station, which has been unused for eight years.
The municipality wants DSB to open the land for commuter parking, but DSB Ejendomme A/S (DSB Properties A/S) is attempting to sell it to developers for housing. Local officials argue that prioritizing station-related activities, like parking, aligns better with the goal of increasing train ridership.
Currently, the limited parking capacity at the station forces many commuters to drive to work instead of taking the train, which contradicts state and municipal policies aimed at promoting train travel. The lack of parking causes frustration and can lead to commuters being late for work.
Hørsholm Municipality insists the local plan designates the area for station-related activities, expecting DSB to support train traffic rather than prioritizing property development profits. The municipality plans to advocate politically for a change in DSB’s decision and involve the Minister of Transport.
Morten Slotved, Mayor of Hørsholm Municipality, and Tomas Dyrbye, Deputy Chairman of the Urban Development Committee, both from the Conservative People’s Party, are spearheading the effort.
