Holger Rune has hired Marco Panichi as his new physical trainer. The announcement comes from Rune’s camp, as reported by TV 2 Sport.
Panichi brings significant experience to Rune’s team, having previously worked with Jannik Sinner, the current world number one. He also spent seven years, from 2017 to May 2024, as part of Novak Djokovic’s team.
Rune announced his search for a new physical trainer after his fourth-round defeat at the French Open in early June. He expressed concerns that his physical condition was hindering his performance in major tournaments.
Rune stated that he hadn’t been able to train consistently during the clay season and felt unsure of his physical condition. He admitted he wasn’t quick enough on his feet. He emphasized the importance of reaching 100 percent physical form to realize his full potential.
Before Wimbledon, Rune had announced a collaboration with a new, unnamed physical trainer. This indicated a change in his approach to physical training leading up to the tournament.
During Wimbledon, Rune reduced his physical training to focus on recovery and preventative exercises. However, he was defeated in the first round by Nicolas Jarry, citing a resurfaced knee injury.
Rune, currently ranked number nine in the world, is scheduled to play his first match at the ATP 500 tournament in Washington D.C. on Wednesday. He is seeded third in the tournament.
In preparation for the tournament, Rune has been training with Andre Agassi.
