Helle Thomsen will now start her tenure as the full-time head coach of the Danish women’s national handball team effective immediately. This decision comes earlier than initially planned, with the original agreement scheduling her full-time commitment to begin in the summer of 2026.
The Danish Handball Federation (DanskHåndbold) officially announced that Thomsen will dedicate herself solely to the national team, relinquishing any concurrent positions.
The change was preceded by CSM Bucuresti’s announcement on Monday regarding Thomsen’s departure due to personal reasons.
Thomsen expressed her enthusiasm in a press release. “I was looking forward to becoming a full-time national coach next summer, and now I get to start already today. It is a fantastic opportunity that I am both proud and grateful for,” she stated. “I look forward to delving even deeper into the work with the players, the team and the entire environment around the national team.”
According to Morten Henriksen, sports director at DanskHåndbold, the early transition will be advantageous for the team’s future success. “We had great confidence in the model with a shared role for the first year, but the fact that Helle can now start full-time from day one is a benefit for everyone,” he said. “It gives us better opportunities to strengthen the interaction between elite, talent and club handball.”
The identity of Thomsen’s assistant coach has not yet been disclosed.
Thomsen’s first match as head coach of the Danish national team will be a home game against Iceland on September 20 in Frederikshavn.
