Helle Thomsen will begin her tenure as head coach of the Danish women’s national handball team in Frederikshavn with a test match against Iceland on September 20th. The game will be held in Arena Nord.
Thomsen expressed her excitement about starting her new role in her hometown, where she had her handball upbringing.
Arena Nord’s CEO, Per Malmberg, also shared his enthusiasm for welcoming Thomsen back to Frederikshavn, where she had a successful playing career with Frederikshavn F.I. in the 1990s, securing multiple top-four finishes and silver and bronze medals.
Thomsen was appointed as the new national coach in April, succeeding Jesper Jensen. She previously coached the national teams of the Netherlands and Sweden.
Thomsen is currently coaching CSM Bucuresti and will continue in that role for the first year alongside her national team duties.
Both Denmark and Iceland will be participating in the World Championships in December. Thomsen sees Iceland as a suitable opponent for her debut, emphasizing the importance of getting to know the team and establishing a good rhythm before the World Cup. She aims for a victory but prioritizes team bonding and preparation.
