GPS Failures Increase in Aircraft Flying to Denmark Due to Suspected Russian Jamming

GPS interference is increasingly affecting aircraft bound for Denmark, forcing pilots to use traditional navigation methods. The Danish Transport Authority has confirmed disruptions, with Naviair reporting about two weekly incidents where civilian pilots encounter brief GPS outages.

The jamming, suspected to originate from Russia, is most intense over Bornholm and southern Sweden. Flightradar24 data indicates constant jamming in the southern Baltic Sea since November 2023, with only brief periods of low-level interference.

GPS jamming involves overpowering satellite signals with electronic noise, while spoofing forges signals, potentially causing aircraft to believe they are in a different location. While jamming increases pilot workload, spoofing poses a greater risk, potentially leading to disorientation and accidents.

Real-time monitoring shows hundreds of instances of GPS spoofing daily in the southern Baltic Sea and northern Poland. The center of the jamming is the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, with the noise affecting aircraft at altitudes of 10-12 kilometers.

Experts suggest the jamming may be for defensive purposes against missiles and drones, but some question the high signal strength and its use during peacetime. Despite the increase in reported incidents, the Danish Transport Authority maintains that aviation safety is not compromised, as aircraft can switch to alternative navigation systems.
