Government Proposes Stricter Penalties and Increased Prison Capacity

The Danish government is set to introduce a new penal reform focusing on harsher penalties for severe violent crimes and a significant expansion of prison capacity nationwide. Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard announced the proposal at a press conference, emphasizing the need for more impactful consequences for serious violent offenses.

A key element of the reform is the doubling of punishments for severe and extremely severe acts of violence. This measure aims to reflect the gravity of these crimes and deter future offenses.

Furthermore, the government plans to increase the punishment for gross rape by 50 percent, recognizing it as a particularly egregious violation. Similarly, penalties for violence against partners or children will also see a 50 percent increase, underscoring the long-term damage such acts inflict.

To accommodate the anticipated rise in incarcerated individuals due to these stricter penalties, the government proposes a substantial increase in prison capacity, aiming to create over 2000 new prison spaces by 2036. This expansion includes plans for a new women’s prison in western Denmark, supplementing the existing facility in Jyderup on Zealand.
