The Danish government aims to significantly reduce administrative expenses and enhance efficiency by leveraging technology and modifying political practices. The plan includes cutting 5.5 billion kroner in administrative costs, equivalent to 6,500 full-time positions, by 2030. Furthermore, the government, in collaboration with KL (Local Government Denmark) and Danish Regions, aims to free up at least 50 million working hours—equivalent to 30,000 full-time positions—by 2035 through the use of artificial intelligence in the public sector.

Despite Denmark’s strong position in public sector digitization, new initiatives continue to drive up expenses. Examples include a new app for consolidating digital proofs of identity and a digital ID card for foreign labor.

To combat this trend, the proposal suggests two immediate solutions focused on behavioral change and AI implementation. One approach involves politicians deliberately reducing the number of new laws, executive orders, policy proposals, strategies, and press conferences they initiate annually. Simultaneously, members of parliament should focus on sharpening the focus of their parliamentary and committee questions to ministers.

The current process of answering parliamentary questions is resource-intensive, involving multiple layers of coordination and approval within departments and agencies. The suggestion is to implement an AI system, “Folketingsspørgsmål-GPT,” to streamline this process.

This AI could provide instant answers to common questions, drawing from a database of past responses, professional reports, and government strategies. This tool would allow politicians to quickly access information or receive suggestions, allowing them to assess whether they need to manually initiate the conventional, labor-intensive method. This could lead to significant savings in time and resources.
