The GeoGuessr World Championship will take place this Friday and Saturday in K.B. Hallen in Copenhagen, where 16 finalists will compete for the title of the world’s best GeoGuessr player. The popular online geography game, launched in 2013, boasts over 85 million players worldwide.
The competition will test the finalists’ abilities to quickly and accurately identify random locations on the globe using Google Street View. A prize pool of $100,000 (over DKK 640,000) is up for grabs.
Among the competitors is 22-year-old Clément Gerard, a civil engineering student with French heritage, who began playing GeoGuessr in 2023 and is making his World Championship debut. Gerard emphasizes the importance of observing minute details, such as the color of road lines and the appearance of power poles, to determine a location’s country. His knowledge of vineyards, stemming from his upbringing in France, provides him with a unique advantage.
Another Dane, Peter Kibsgaard, will also be participating in the championship.
Last year’s World Cup attracted 11.5 million online viewers. Organizers have sold 1750 tickets for this year’s tournament in Copenhagen. GeoGuessr was created by Swede Anton Wallén.
