Gentofte Municipality is accusing Copenhagen of reckless and arrogant planning that disregards the impact on its neighbors. According to Jesper Marcus, chairman of the Urban Planning Committee and a member of the municipal council in Gentofte Municipality, Copenhagen’s infrastructure and urban development plans are being implemented without proper dialogue or consideration for the consequences on Gentofte and its citizens.
The municipality is criticizing Copenhagen for not addressing Gentofte’s concerns regarding several major projects.
Gentofte claims that Copenhagen’s lack of communication and cooperation undermines the foundation for a modern capital region, affecting cohesion, health, and responsible development across municipal boundaries.
Specifically, Gentofte points to the Eastern Ring Road project, which it says will add significant traffic volume to Gentofte’s roads, including Lyngbyvej, Bernstorffsvej, and Tuborgvej. The municipality fears this will worsen existing congestion, impact road safety near schools and residential areas, and increase noise and environmental pollution.
Another point of contention is the urban development project at Hellerup Station, located on the municipal boundary. Gentofte has raised concerns about the architectural design, building height, parking provisions, and overall impact on the surrounding area, but feels its feedback has been ignored or even met with “harassment”.
Furthermore, Gentofte claims there has been no dialogue regarding plans for a new metro station in Hellerup, despite the project’s potential to cause years of disruption from noise, traffic diversions, and infrastructure strain.
Gentofte insists it is not against development but demands that Copenhagen engage in respectful dialogue and take its concerns seriously when planning projects that affect the neighboring municipality. The municipality emphasizes the importance of cooperation and consideration in building good neighborly relations.
