Frederikshavn Selected to Build New Military Ships for Danish Defense

Frederikshavn has been chosen as the location for a new naval shipyard that will construct military ships for the Danish defense. The decision, according to Frederikshavn Municipality Mayor Karsten Thomsen, is a victory not only for the city but for the entire North Jutland region.

The political agreement to build the shipyard in Frederikshavn was reached by parties involved in the defense agreement, and presented by Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen. The minister emphasized the decision’s significant impact on Danish society, highlighting the importance of building military ships domestically.

Thomsen anticipates that the shipyard will stimulate growth in the area, both directly and through supporting industries. He estimates that the shipyard will generate between 500 and 600 new jobs within the municipality. The mayor also hopes that the new shipyard will attract more residents to Frederikshavn.

The new naval shipyard will occupy approximately 135,000 square meters in Frederikshavn Harbour, near Naval Base Frederikshavn. The municipality states that the shipyard will support the Defence’s operational needs and enhance the maintenance and construction of naval vessels.

Planning and establishment of the shipyard are expected to begin in August.
