Four parties want to reintroduce Great Prayer Day as a public holiday

Liberal Alliance, Danmarksdemokraterne, Dansk Folkeparti, and De Konservative are set to release a joint statement advocating for the reinstatement of Store Bededag (Great Prayer Day) as a public holiday. This announcement comes on the eve of the civic convention in Fredericia.

The parties have pledged to reinstate the holiday if they gain governmental influence after the upcoming parliamentary election. Dansk Folkeparti’s chairman, Morten Messerschmidt, confirmed this commitment to DR.

The SVM government, along with De Radikale, abolished Store Bededag in 2023 with the goal of increasing treasury funds by approximately three billion kroner and generating an additional labor supply of 8,000 individuals. The government initially justified the decision by citing the need to finance increased defense and security expenditures resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Inger Støjberg, chairman of Danmarksdemokraterne, criticized the government’s rationale, stating that the economic situation has improved significantly since then. She accuses the government of acting under false pretenses, suggesting that the current financial state allows for the reinstatement of the holiday.

While Liberal Alliance previously opposed the reinstatement, they have now reversed their stance. However, Venstre, the only blue party in the government, has expressed opposition to the proposal. Political spokesman Jan E. Jørgensen (V) deemed it irresponsible, despite acknowledging its popularity.

In addition to the Store Bededag issue, the four parties have jointly proposed abolishing the ban on nuclear power, which has been in effect since 1985. They also aim to repeal the Koran law, which criminalizes the burning of religious texts, and allocate more funding to independent and private schools. The next parliamentary election must occur before the end of October 2026.
