Four Long-Range Drones on Their Way to the Danish Defence

Denmark is set to significantly bolster its surveillance capabilities in the Arctic and North Atlantic with the acquisition of four long-range drones. The MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, described as a “milestone” by the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (FMI), are expected to be delivered between 2028 and 2029.

The purchase, financed through the Acceleration Fund and previous political agreements, is part of an agreement concluded through NATO’s procurement organisation. According to Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, this move is crucial for strengthening both Danish and European security.

The drones will be equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and signal intelligence technology, enabling them to operate in harsh climates and cover large distances. The FMI notes their size, with a wingspan of 24 meters and a length of almost 12 meters, making them comparable to aircraft.

Chief of Defence Michael Wiggers Hyldgaard emphasized the importance of speed in building the Defence’s combat power, welcoming the agreement on the delivery of these drones. Danish personnel will undergo training in the USA prior to operating the drones. The acquisition aligns with the need for Europe to enhance its own defense capabilities and strengthen its contribution to NATO, according to the Minister of Defence.
