Former Bodybuilder Shares His Decade-Long Battle with Orthorexia

Philip Poulsen, a 34-year-old psychotherapist, recounts his decade-long struggle with orthorexia, an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating. The condition began during his time at Nærum Gymnasium in Copenhagen, fueled by the rise of social media and bodybuilding role models.

Poulsen’s pursuit of a perfect physique led him to extreme dietary habits and rigorous exercise routines. He meticulously tracked his calorie intake, consumed large amounts of protein and vegetables, and dedicated hours to working out. This obsession with control over his body gradually consumed his life, causing him to isolate himself from friends and activities.

The turning point came when Poulsen experienced inexplicable abdominal pain and consulted a specialist. The doctor’s advice to “relax” about his diet was a revelation, prompting him to reconsider his lifestyle. He began incorporating previously forbidden foods like pasta and bread into his diet and reduced his intense training schedule.

While Poulsen eventually overcame his orthorexia, he emphasizes the need for greater awareness and support for individuals struggling with similar issues. He stresses the importance of open communication and encourages people to check in with each other, recognizing that his own recovery was triggered by an external observation about his well-being. Poulsen hopes that by sharing his story, he can help others recognize the signs of orthorexia and seek help before it consumes their lives.

Orthorexia is not a formally recognized eating disorder, making it difficult to track its prevalence. However, studies suggest that a significant percentage of young adults experience symptoms of the condition, potentially surpassing the combined rates of anorexia and bulimia. Experts believe that social media may contribute to the rise in orthorexia by promoting unrealistic body ideals and fueling an obsession with healthy eating.
