FC Copenhagen’s Magnus Mattsson Out for Season with Knee Injury

Magnus Mattsson, a key midfielder for FC Copenhagen, will miss the remainder of the season due to a significant knee injury sustained during Wednesday’s match against FC Basel. The club confirmed the news on its website, revealing the extent of the setback.

Head coach Jacob Neestrup expressed his disappointment, highlighting Mattsson’s importance to the team’s domestic and international aspirations. Neestrup emphasized the impact of Mattsson’s absence on both the team’s objectives and the player’s personal opportunity to participate in a promising season.

Mattsson’s tenure with FCK since his arrival in January 2024 has been marked by fluctuations, but he recently solidified his place in Neestrup’s starting lineup, contributing several strong performances. The injury occurred in the second half of the Basel game when Mattsson clutched his knee and was subsequently assisted off the field, later seen leaving the stadium on crutches.

The club’s medical staff is committed to working diligently to rehabilitate Mattsson and facilitate his return to the team. Neestrup conveyed optimism that Mattsson would eventually return to play significant games for FCK.

This long-term injury exacerbates the vulnerability of FCK’s already thin midfield. Following the victory over Basel, Neestrup acknowledged the pressing need to bolster the midfield before the upcoming autumn season, which includes Champions League football.

Sports director Sune Smith-Nielsen faces a tight deadline to address this issue, with the transfer window closing on Monday, September 1st. The club is now under pressure to find suitable reinforcements to compensate for Mattsson’s absence and strengthen the midfield before the transfer deadline.
