Favorable Conditions Expected for Viewing Total Lunar Eclipse in Denmark

A total lunar eclipse, also known as a blood moon, is expected to be visible in Denmark on Sunday evening, according to the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). The event, which occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, casting a shadow on the lunar surface, will give the moon a distinctive copper-red glow.

The total eclipse phase is predicted to last until 9 p.m., with the partial eclipse continuing for almost an hour afterward. The next total lunar eclipse visible in Denmark is not expected until December 31, 2028.

The lunar eclipse will be visible from moonrise, which occurs shortly before 8 p.m. For optimal viewing, Ole Eggers Bjælde, an astrophysicist and museum inspector at the Science Museums in Aarhus, advises finding a location with an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon.

Bjælde explains that because it is a full moon, the Moon rises opposite the setting Sun. This means that viewers should look towards the east, almost turning around from the sunset to see the blood moon.

The red color of the moon during a lunar eclipse is caused by sunlight being deflected through Earth’s atmosphere. This effect, according to Bjælde, allows a small amount of sunlight to reach the moon even when it is hidden behind the Earth. The most recent blood moon visible in Denmark occurred in January 2019. The timing of blood moon viewings in Denmark can vary due to the relative movements of the Moon, Sun, and Earth.
