Faroe Islands Seek Greater Independence from Denmark within the Commonwealth Realm

The Faroe Islands are pushing for increased independence from Denmark, seeking control over foreign policy, trade agreements, and membership in international organizations. This push comes amid geopolitical shifts and a renewed focus on the Commonwealth Realm, comprising Denmark, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland. All six parties in the Faroese parliament agree on the need for greater autonomy, aiming to modernize the relationship with Denmark.

Finance Minister Ruth Vang of the ruling Framsokn party emphasizes the desire for a more equal relationship with Denmark, advocating for the term “Danish realm” instead of “Commonwealth Realm,” which she sees as a Danish invention implying equality that doesn’t exist. The push for independence is not about animosity towards Denmark, but rather about the Faroe Islands’ ability to represent itself and pursue its own interests on the global stage.

The current Faroese government aims to achieve more independence before the next election in December 2026. The key issue is whether this can be achieved within the framework of the Danish constitution, which currently grants the Danish government authority over foreign policy matters. A decision is expected in the fall regarding the Faroe Islands’ potential independent membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO), which could significantly shape the debate on independence and potentially push the boundaries of the constitution.

While the Faroe Islands is a small nation with approximately 55,000 inhabitants, equivalent to the size of Haderslev Municipality, it faces challenges such as staffing embassies and providing certain hospital treatments. Despite these challenges, there is a strong desire to assert greater control over its own affairs and reduce reliance on Denmark. Past attempts at secession in 1946 and 2000 did not succeed, but this third effort is fueled by economic progress and a unified political will.

The Danish government, led by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, has not yet stated its position on the Faroese proposal. However, the Prime Minister’s Office has emphasized the importance of ensuring that the Commonwealth Realm remains relevant and adapts to the evolving needs and desires of its constituent countries. There is a sense that Denmark will seek to avoid repeating past traumas of losing territories, such as Iceland in 1944, and will work to find a solution that maintains the Commonwealth Realm while granting the Faroe Islands greater autonomy.
