EU and USA Agree to Cooperate on Combating Organized Crime and Drug Trafficking

The EU and the USA have agreed to collaborate in the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking. This agreement was reached during a meeting between the US Attorney General and EU Justice Ministers in Warsaw, Poland.

Denmark’s Minister of Justice, Peter Hummelgaard, who attended the meeting, welcomed the agreement, highlighting the importance of combating drug smuggling, which will be a priority during Denmark’s upcoming EU Presidency starting July 1. Hummelgaard emphasized the need for joint efforts to combat the trade in synthetic drugs, including synthetic opioids, and other narcotics that cross national borders.

While the EU and the USA are still engaged in difficult negotiations regarding tariffs on European goods, both parties recognize potential areas for cooperation in the justice sector. These areas include the fight against terrorism, “illegal migration,” and cybercrime.

Hummelgaard specifically emphasized the importance of fighting drug crime, noting the devastating impact of opioids on young people on both sides of the Atlantic. He stated that all possible measures must be taken to combat this issue.

During Denmark’s EU Presidency, which begins on July 1, the effort against drug crime will be a key focus. Hummelgaard plans to prioritize strengthening the resilience of European ports to drug smuggling.

In connection with the upcoming informal Council meeting in Copenhagen on July 22-23, Hummelgaard will host a ministerial meeting in the European Ports Alliance. The Ports Alliance, launched last year, aims to enhance cooperation between customs authorities, police, ports, and shipping companies across EU member states to prevent drugs from entering Europe through ports. The meeting with the US Attorney General is part of the ongoing cooperation between the USA and the EU in the area of justice and home affairs. This cooperation includes two annual ministerial meetings.
