Elmer Møller’s bid for a Grand Slam debut ended in defeat Thursday, leaving Holger Rune as Denmark’s only male singles player at the French Open. Møller, 21, lost to Italian Matteo Gigante in the qualifying final.
Møller, ranked 108th globally, was favored against Gigante, ranked 167th. Despite creating early break point chances, Møller couldn’t capitalize. He missed two break points at 40-15, and another shortly after, proving to be a turning point.
Gigante seized the opportunity, converting a break point to take a 5-3 lead and serving out the first set. Møller faced further setbacks at the beginning of the second set, getting broken and falling behind 0-2.
He was broken again at 2-3 and 4-5, forcing him to break Gigante’s serve to stay in the match. Despite showing composure to force a tiebreak, Møller struggled to find consistency. Gigante took advantage, winning the tiebreak 7-5 and securing his spot in the main tournament.
