Electricity Prices in Denmark to Change Every Quarter Hour from October 1st

From October 1st, electricity prices in Denmark, and across the European electricity market, will transition from changing hourly to every quarter of an hour, resulting in 96 different prices daily. This shift aims to better align electricity production from renewable sources like solar and wind with pricing.

While many Danes closely monitor electricity prices, industry experts believe that only large electricity consumers, such as businesses, will likely benefit financially from the new system due to their ability to adjust consumption at a quarterly level. For the general population, the impact is expected to be minimal.

Quarterly billing will only apply to customers with variable-price electricity subscriptions and newer electricity meters capable of handling quarterly values. Consumers should be aware that older meters may not be compatible. The availability of variable products based on the new pricing system among electricity suppliers remains uncertain, but consumers can switch suppliers if desired.

In 2023, 69% of electricity price agreements in Denmark were based on variable prices, a notable increase from 43% in 2021. The move to quarterly pricing is intended to reflect fluctuations in renewable energy production more accurately.
